24th Kolkata International Film Festival began

The 24th Kolkata International Film Festival began in Kolkata on 10 November 2018.

A centenary tribute will be paid to legendary Swedish director-producer Ingmar Bergman through the screening of eight of his outstanding movies.

The event is considered to be the country’s second oldest film fest.

Award winning international films from the US, Spain, France and Russia will also be screened.

Goa bans importing of fish officially for 6 months

Goa has banned importing/bringing fish from outside. The announcement was made on November 10. The ban included import from Karnataka.

The announcement has kicked off a controversy with fishermen from the State questioning the rationale behind the decision.

The ban has come for a second time this year, the first being in August for 15 days. Later, the government set up border check-posts to inspect whether the marine products complied with FDA regulations.

The stringent measures have affected Karnataka fishermen and traders are facing a difficult situation. Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said that unless and until the consignment has FDA certification, fish cannot be brought/imported into Goa.

Also, the government is to set up quality control laboratories in the State to test marine products within 6 months. The ban will be lifted only after the setting up of laboratories.

Ashok Kumar Gupta appointed as CCI Chairperson

Ashok Kumar Gupta has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Competition Commission of India (CCI).

He would be replacing the acting Chairperson of CCI Sudhir Mital.

CCI is a statutory body of the Government of India responsible for enforcing the Competition Act, 2002.

It was established on 14 October 2003.

Bajrang becomes number one in world

On 10 November 2018, Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia achieved the number one rank in the world in the 65kg category.

He was placed atop the ranking table with 96 points in the United World Wrestling (UWW) list.

Alejandro Enrique from Cuba is at number two with 66 points.

Russia’s Akhmed Chakaev is at number three and Takuto Otoguro from Japan is at number four.

ATP World Tour Awards 2018 announced

The 2018 ATP World Tour Awards were announced on 9 November 2018.

Novak Djokovic won the ‘Comeback Player of the Year Award’.

Djokovic’s coach Marian Vajda was also named ATP Coach of the Year.

Rafael Nadal won the ‘Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award’ for his fair play, professionalism and integrity on and off the tennis court.

Roger Federer won the Fans’ Favourite player Award.

UNWFP & Alibaba entered into a partnership

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and Alibaba Group have entered into a strategic partnership to support efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).

Alibaba will provide its technology and resources to support the digital transformation of WFP’s operations.

Under the partnership, a digital World Hunger Map to monitor the status of global hunger will be developed.

With 5462 beds, Patna Medical College to be world‘s largest hospital

The Bihar cabinet gave its nod for the redevelopment of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) into a world’s largest 5462-bed hospital at an estimated cost of Rs 5540.07 crore.

The hospital would be redeveloped by Bihar Medical Services & Infrastructure Corporation Ltd (BMSICL).

The PMCH was established in 1925. The hospital would be redeveloped in three phases in seven years.

The new PMCH will have 250 MBBS seats against the existing 150, and 200 PG seats against the existing 146.

3 new members appointed to CBDT

PK Dash, Akhilesh Ranjan and Neena Kumar have been appointed as new members in the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).

All three officers are from the 1982-batch of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS).

Sushil Chandra is the chairman of CBDT.

The CBDT frames the policy for the I-T Department that is tasked to enforce direct tax laws in the country.

PM to inaugurate first multi-modal terminal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the first multi-modal terminal on the Ganga river in Varanasi on 12 November 2018.

The aim is to promote inland waterways as a cheaper and more environment-friendly means of transport.

The multi-modal terminals are being built under the Jal Marg Vikas Project.

The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) is the project implementing agency.

Exit polls banned by Election Commission

The Election Commission imposed ban on holding exit polls from 12 November in Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Telangana, and Rajasthan.

Under the Representation of People Act, 1951, Election Commission bans exit polls from the time the poll begins till half-an-hour after the polling ends.

An exit poll is a poll of voters taken immediately after they have exited the polling stations.

PM to visit Singapore on Nov 14-15

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Singapore on 14 November 2018 to attend the 13th East Asia Summit (EAS).

The EAS is a premier forum in the Asia-Pacific region.

EAS includes India, China, Japan, Republic of Korea, Australia, New Zealand, United States, Russia and 10 ASEAN member-states.

It was established in 2005.

Swati won ‘Press Freedom Award for Courage’

Journalist Swati Chaturvedi has won the 2018 Press Freedom Award for Courage on 8 November 2018.

She won the award for her book, ‘I am a Troll: Inside The Secret World of The BJP’s Digital Army’.

The award ceremony was organised by the UK chapter of Paris-based Reporters Sans Frontieres (RSF) or Reporters Without Borders in London.

Gujarat to introduce new digital platform for Agriculture land

Gujarat government decided to launch a digital platform for the conversion of agricultural land to Non-Agriculture (NA).

Under the scheme of Digital India, all district collector offices and District Panchayats will be covered and monitored through a dedicated online system.

‘Mere Pyaare Prime Minister‘ only Asian film screened at Rome Film Festival

Filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra‘s upcoming film ‘Mere Pyaare Prime Minister‘ was the only Asian film which was screened at the Rome Film Festival.

The film revolves around four children living in a Mumbai slum. One of them wants to build a toilet for his single mother and makes an appeal to the Prime Minister.

Global Cooling Innovation Summit

Two-day Global Cooling Innovation Summit will be inaugurated by Union Science & Technology Minister, Dr. Harsh Vardhan in New Delhi on 12th November 2018.

The summit will also see the launching of ‘Global Cooling Prize’ competition.

The aim of the competition is to spur the development of a residential cooling solution that has at least five times (5x) less climate impact.

Ladakh restoration project wins UNESCO award

‘The LAMO Center’ in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ladakh region has won an UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation on 9 November 2018.

It was chosen for its systematic restoration of an aristocratic house in Ladakh.

It won in the category of ‘Award of Distinction’ under UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.

PM to inaugurate Ring Road and Babatpur Airport Road in Varanasi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate two important national highways in Varanasi on November 12, having a total length of 34 kilometres and constructed at a cost of Rs 1,571.95 crore.

The 16.55 km Varanasi Ring Road Phase-I has been completed at a cost of Rs 759.36 crore, while the work of four-laning and construction of 17.25 km Babatput-Varanasi road on NH-56 has cost Rs 812.59 crore.

The roads have been constructed by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) under Bharatmala programme.

The Babatpur Airport highway will link Varanasi to the airport and go on to Jaunpur, Sultanpur and Lucknow.

The Ring Road, with two Road Over Bridges and a flyover, will provide a way for traffic on NH 56 (Lucknow-Varanasi), NH 233 ( Azamgarh-Varanasi), NH 29 ( Gorakhpur-Varanasi ) and Ayodhya – Varanasi highways to bypass Varanasi city, thereby reducing traffic congestion in the city.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Ananth Kumar Passes Away

Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, and Chemicals and Fertilizers H.N. Ananth Kumar, also a senior BJP leader from the State passed away in Bengaluru. He was 59.

Mr Kumar was diagnosed with lung cancer at an advanced stage in June. A six-time member of parliament from Bengaluru South Lok Sabha seat, Mr. Kumar was representing it continuously since 1996.
