‘Bhubaneswar Me Wi-Fi’ launched

Odisha Government launched the ‘Bhubaneswar Me Wi-Fi’ project in Bhubaneswar on 5 November 2018.

The project is implemented by Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL).

It will initially have 100 hotspots enabled locations with 275 access points.

One wi-fi hotspot would be able to handle 150 users at a given point of time

BSCL is a Special Purpose Vehicle incorporated by Odisha Government.

Samay won the ‘Breakthrough Junior Challenge’

Samay Godika won the 2018 ‘Breakthrough Junior Challenge’ for his video submitted in the life sciences category on circadian rhythms.

He will receive a $250,000 college scholarship.

‘Breakthrough Junior Challenge’ is a global science video competition designed to inspire creative thinking about fundamental concepts in the life sciences, physics, and mathematics.

R Chandranathan appointed new Meghalaya DGP

The Meghalaya government has appointed R Chandranathan as the Director General of Police (DGP).

Chandranathan, an IPS officer of 1986 batch Assam-Meghalaya cadre, was serving as the Special Director General (Railways in Assam).

Chandranathan succeeded former DGP Swaraj Bir Singh who retired on 31 July 2018

European defence coalition launched in Paris

Defence ministers from European countries met in Paris on 7 November 2018 and launched a joint military force known as the ‘European Intervention Initiative’ or EI2.

The military force could rapidly be deployed in response to a conflict or natural disaster.

Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Portugal, Britain and Finland are part of this initiative.

DEPwD to organise Global IT Challenge

‘Global IT Challenge (GITC) for Youth with Disabilities 2018’ will be organised by the from 9 November 2018.

It is organised by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) under Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

India is hosting the event in collaboration with the Government of Korea and Rehabilitation International.

LS Secretary General got one-year extension

The tenure of Snehlata Shrivastava has been extended by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan for one year.

She was scheduled to retire on 30 November 2018 but after the extension, she will retire in 30 November 2019.

She is the first woman Secretary General of the Lok Sabha.

She has served as Secretary in the Ministry of Law and Justice and as Special/Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Finance.

West Bengal to observe ‘Rosogolla Day’

The West Bengal government will observe ‘Rosogolla Day’ on November 14.

The day will be observed to commemorate the first anniversary of the State’s famous sweet getting Geographical Indication (GI) tag as ‘Bengal’s Rosogolla’.

On 14 November 2017, West Bengal got the GI tag for ‘Bengal’s Rosogolla’.

The GI tag is a sign that identifies a product as originating from a particular place.

India hosts ‘Global IT Challenge for Youth with Disabilities, 2018‘ from 9 November

‘Global IT Challenge for Youth with Disabilities, 2018‘ (GITC) is being organised by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) under Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment here during 9-11 November, 2018.

This year, India is hosting the event in collaboration with Government of Korea and Rehabilitation International (RI). It propagates implementation of United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) - Article 21 relates to access to information. 18 countries namely, Indonesia, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Mongolia, Cambodia, Laos, Philippines, Korea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, UAE, India and UK - participate in this event.

India loses row over safeguard duty at WTO

India lost a major trade dispute at the World Trade Organization (WTO) on 6 November 2018.

A dispute settlement panel upheld Japan’s complaint that India’s imposition of safeguard duty on imports of hot-rolled steel flat products during September 2015 and March 2018 violated core global trade rules.

Japan launched the dispute settlement proceedings against India in 2017.

ASEAN member countries offer concession

Several Asian member countries of the proposed Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) have offered India a concession on the extent to which it needs to open up its markets.

India can now open up 83% of its market against the earlier 92%.

The RCEP is a proposed trade agreement between the ASEAN countries and the six free trade agreement partners.

India’s economic growth to slow down in 2019

A report titled ‘Global Macro Outlook 2019-20’ was released by Moody’s Investors Service on 8 November 2018.

The report said that the Indian economy will expand 7.4% in 2018, but the growth will slow down to 7.3% in 2019.

It also said that the economy grew 7.9% in the first half (January-June) of 2018.

Moody’s said global economic growth will slow in 2019 and 2020 to a little under 2.9%.

Lok Sabha Secretary General gets one-year extension

The tenure of the Lok Sabha Secretary General, Snehlata Shrivastava, has been extended by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan for one year.

The 1982-batch retired IAS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, who was appointed last year in rank and status of a Cabinet Secretary, was scheduled to retire on November 30, 2018.

Her extension will be effective from December 1, 2018 up to November 30, 2019.

She has served as Secretary in the Ministry of Law and Justice and as Special/Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Finance.

In a first, DRS to be used in ICC Women‘s T20 tournament

The Decision Review System (DRS), using ball-tracking and edge detection technology, will be implemented from this year‘s International Cricket Council (ICC) women‘s World Twenty20 edition, which is slated to be held from November 9 to November 24 in the West Indies.

10 teams - Windies, Australia, England, India, Pakistan, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Ireland will take part in the tournament.


Legal Services Day - 9th November

Legal Services Day is celebrated every year on 9th of November in all the states Authorities.

At this day variety of legal literacy camps and functions are organized at many places in the capital city of the country.

People from government as well as non government organizations take part in the functions and camps related to the Legal Services Day.

The 9th of November is selected as the Legal Services Day which was first started by the Supreme Court in the year 1995 all across the India to offer help and support to the weaker and poor group of sections of people which may be women, disabled persons, Scheduled Tribes, children, Scheduled Castes, human trafficking victims as well as natural calamities victims.
