Centre made jute packaging mandatory for all food grains

The Centre approved a proposal making jute packaging mandatory for all food grains.

The decision was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, headed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In India, the jute sector employs approximately 3.7 lakh workers directly.

The move is significant as it would support several lakh farm families and workers whose livelihood is dependent on the jute sector.


Mary Kom won gold in boxing championship

MC Mary Kom won the gold medal in Women’s World Boxing Championship in New Delhi on 24 November 2018.

She defeated Ukraine’s Hanna Okhota in the final match.

She became the first female boxer to win six gold medals at World Boxing Championships.

She previously won the gold medal in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 editions of the World Boxing Championships.


Sachin is the brand ambassador of Apollo Tyres

Tyre maker, Apollo Tyres has appointed cricketer Sachin Tendulkar as its new brand ambassador on 22 November 2018.

He will be the ambassador of Apollo Tyres for a period of five years.

Apart from Apollo Tyres, he is also the brand Ambassador for BMW in India.

Sachin Tendulkar was the former brand ambassador of MRF Tyres.


South Eastern Railway (SER) won the 41st All India Railway bridge championship

South Eastern Railway (SER) emerged champion in the team event of the 41st all-India Railway bridge championship at Garden Reach, Kolkata. South Eastern, Eastern, Metro and Central entered the super league before the former won the title with 43.79 VPs.

Eastern finished runner-up. South Eastern was represented by Hasibul Hasan, Pranab Roy, Sandip Dutta, Prasanta Bera, Subhasish Sarkar and Wrik Chakraborty who have also represented the country in many international tournaments.


Filmmaker Nandita Das to receive FIAPF Award

Filmmaker Nandita Das will be honored with the International Federation of Film Producers Associations( FIAPF) Award at the 12th Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) in Brisbane on the 29th of this month.

She will be presented the award in recognition of her achievement in film in the Asia Pacific region.

This was announced by Michael Hawkins, chairman of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards and its academy in a statement in Brisbane.


Karnataka CM launched Badavara Bandhu scheme

Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy launched mobile banks to disburse interest-free loans to street vendors and small traders at the AMPC Market in Yeshwantpur.

The mobile bank scheme is called ‘Badavara Bandhu’ (friend of the poor).

The scheme announced in the budget this year seeks to free the poor business community from the clutches of moneylenders.

Under the scheme, small traders will get loans of up to Rs.10,000 without any interest and collateral.

The beneficiaries will have the flexibility of repaying the loan on daily installments of Rs.100 or one-time repayment within three months.

If they repay within the stipulated time, they are eligible for a fresh loan of up to Rs.15,000.


Sachin Waze launched app offering data protection and privacy in Mumbai

A messaging app aimed at reducing rumor-mongering and ensuring complete data privacy was launched by former police officer Sachin Waze in Mumbai.

The app, Direct Baat, is available on Android and is being developed for other platforms.

Mr. Waze said the app does not store any data of the user except for registration details, which eliminates the scope of user data being leaked owing to external or internal breaches.


Hockey captain Manpreet signed up with Adidas

This happened ahead of the season-ending World Cup to be played in Bhubaneswar from November 28 to December 16. He has conferred the Arjuna Award earlier in 2018.


Tamil Nadu seeks Rs.14,910 crore aid from Centre

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami sought the aid of Rs.14,910 crore towards relief, permanent restoration and mitigation efforts in central districts of Tamil Nadu ravaged by Cyclone Gaja.

The team led by Home ministry official Daniel E. Richard is to arrive in Chennai.

The team is to visit the cyclone-affected areas.

A sum of Rs.7,077 crore has been sought for permanent restoration work by the Electricity Department, which is working round the clock to install over one lakh electric poles.


Former Indian Hockey Player Sandeep Michael Passes Away

Former Indian hockey player, Sandeep Michael, who captained the Indian junior team to a gold at the Asia Cup 2003, died at the age of 33 after battling an unspecified neurological problem.

In 2001, he made his debut for the country as a junior in the Under-18 Asia Cup at Ipoh in Malaysia under Jugraj Singh.

Michael found fame at the senior level in a tournament in Australia in 2003.


Forbes India Leadership Awards 2018 announced

The ‘Forbes India Leadership Awards’ was held on November 22 in Mumbai.

The award honours the top executives of companies in India.

Azim Premji, Chairman of Wipro Limited, got the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award 2018’.

Vivek Chaand Sehgal, Chairman of Motherson Sumi Systems, got the ‘Entrepreneur for the Year 2018 award’.


‘Jhiri Mela’ inaugurated by J-K Governor

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik inaugurated a week-long ‘Jhiri Mela’ at village Jhiri in Jammu district on 23 November 2018.

The annual fair is commemorated in the memory of the martyrdom of ‘Baba Jittoo’.

He was a farmer who gave up his life about 500 years ago in protest against the oppressive demands of a landlord.


Karnataka State to introduce biometric attendance system in govt. colleges

Karnataka State is to introduce biometric attendance system in government colleges.

The Biometric system of attendance will also be introduced in the colleges under Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode.

The teachers and staff of the colleges running in shifts will have to perform the duty for minimum seven hours divided into shifts.

Higher Education Minister Prem Prakash Pandey said that the decision has been taken on directives issued by the Chief Minister Raman Singh in a meeting of the Department.


Joyce Msuya appointed as acting Executive Director of UNEP

Tanzanian biologist Joyce Msuya appointed as acting Executive Director of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) after the resignation of Erik Solheim.

Erik Solheim resigned from the post of Executive director of UNEP following an internal audit report that said he had gobbled up $500,000 in unnecessary and budgeted travel expenses in just 22 months.

Msuya Msuya previously worked with World Bank and she is consistently advocating for conservation of the planet.


Noted Indian Classical Musician Ustad Imrat Khan Passes Away

Classical music stalwart Ustad Imrat Khan, who dedicated his life to propagating the Sitar and the surbahar worldwide, has died in the US after a brief illness. He was 83.

He belonged to the illustrious Etawa Gharana, or the Imdadkhani Gharana, named after his grandfather Ustad Imdad Khan.

He had also performed at the Cannes Film Festival in 1970.


India and Pakistan to commit to Kartarpur corridor

India and Pakistan exchanged letters to commit themselves to build the required infrastructure for visa-free direct travel by Sikh pilgrims to Pakistan’s Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara, allowing them to mark the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev in November 2019.

Pakistani Minister described the move as the “victory of peace lobbies” in both countries.

Officials of both countries are to meet soon to discuss the logistics of the corridor and the point of border-crossing where the roads, which pilgrims on the Indian side will take from Dera Guru Nanak Dev in Gurdaspur district, will lead directly to the border, and from the Pakistani side of the border directly to the Kartarpur Darbar Sahib Gurdwara.


‘India Skills Report 2019’ released

As per the ‘India Skills Report 2019’, Andhra Pradesh has topped the list of states with the highest employability followed by Rajasthan and Haryana.

The report also said that the employability levels of engineering graduates have increased across all the sectors.

The report was published jointly by Wheebox, PeopleStrong and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).


India To Host 50th Union World Conference On Lung Health In 2019

The 50th Union World Conference on Lung Health will be held in Hyderabad, a global organisation working in this field announced.

The conference ‘Ending the Emergency: Science, Leadership, Action’ which will start in October 2019, the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease stated.

 

National Milk Day observed on 26 November

National Milk Day is observed on 26 November every year.

The day commemorates the contribution of Dr Verghese Kurien towards Milk Revolution in India.

Dr Verghese Kurien played a key role in the formation of milk co-operative ‘Amul’.

He is also known as ‘Father of the White Revolution’ in India.


Constitution day observed on 26 November

Constitution day which is also known as the ‘Samvidhan Divas’ is celebrated every year on 26 November.

The adoption of the Constitution took place on 26 November 1949 but it came into effect on 26 January 1950.

On 19 November 2015, the government of India with the help of a gazette notification declared 26 November as the Constitution Day.
